Looking at the Ki in Reiki

The word Reiki means universal life energy. The first part, Rei, signifies the ‘universal’ element. Meaning it is everywhere.

The second part, Ki, refers to energy, or life energy which I am going to explore a little further. At the end of this blog is an experiment you can play with to get a taste of how it works for yourself.

Energy is found in all living things but it is hard to see and quantify when you look around you in the material world. It can sound a little mysterious or not related to the self. Yet we talk about energy all the time in our day to day lives when we talk about tiredness, or feeling lively, or when we talk about good vibes or bad vibes for example.

When I think and visualise energy, I see it as an interconnected web that is expanding, flowing, and moving in and around everything. This web of energy connects us to each other, to animals, trees, rocks, water, and the world around us as well as the universe. We may not often think of it in those terms but here are some examples of where you may have experienced life energy:

  • Standing beside a waterfall
  • Walking in a forest or other natural surrounding
  • Touching a rock or crystal
  • Feeling the presence of someone behind you
  • Thinking of someone and they contact you that same moment, hour, or day

Energy is located in every cell in your body. It is very abundant in babies and small children, and as we age, it does not replenish or restore as quickly so we slow down and we may get tired more easily. Many things can impact our energy levels: diet, environment, work, commuting, our relationships with others, our physical and mental health, and so on.

There are ways though that we can replenish and revive our energy, or life force where we can re-experience our inner vitality. Reiki is one such method. There is also Tai Chi, Gi-gong, Yoga, and many more methods.

In Reiki, the practitioner opens themselves as a conduit with this web of energy so that it can work through them and guide them to bring about what is needed for the person receiving it. Reiki works with the body’s energy system to bring about the healing it needs. Reiki supports, rather than replaces, conventional medicinal treatment and can also aid in relaxation.

The beauty is that it can be done either face to face or remotely through distance healing. Geography is not a barrier as the energy is everywhere at the same time. Both giver and receiver in Reiki can plug in and connect with that life energy to gain its restorative benefits.

If you would like to benefit from Reiki, why not book a session with me today, I would love to share this practice with you.

If you are still unsure whether this life energy exists try this little experiment I came across in The Reiki Bible by Eleanor McKenzie.
