What is your relationship with silence?
In the video below I ask what is your relationship with silence? I talk about some of the benefits of it and I invite you to cultivate more silence in your life.
I’m Anand Quinn, an emotional wellness and embodiment coach based in Tuamgraney, Co Clare, Ireland, and I’ve been facilitating meditations for over 10 years. One of the most powerful practices I’ve discovered is cultivating silence; not just in formal meditation, but into my daily life.
The Challenge of Pure Silence
So how can you cultivate more silence in your life?
A good starting point is to see how long you can remain silent for, meaning how long can you sit with no thoughts, no activity, no doing? It may sound simple, but trying to be in a state of pure silence for even just a minute is an achievement.
Often the mind starts interfering within seconds, not minutes.
When you start seeing how powerful the mind is, how many thoughts you have from moment to moment, that is a good thing to see because then you have a starting point. You can see the busyness of the mind.
This isn’t failure—it’s awareness. And awareness is always the first step toward transformation.
Start With What Is Easiest
I agree with Osho when he says start with what is easiest because there is less of a fight or resistance.
If you are into running, use that to cultivate moments of silence as you run. In my case, I easily fall into silence when I cook, and in particular chop vegetables. The repetitive motion, the focus on the task, the rhythm of the knife, create natural doorways to silence.
You can try this with walking, eating, dancing, or any other activity that you can easily relax into and notice the moments of silence. Continue to build these golden moments of silence so it can grow in you.
The key is choosing activities where silence can emerge naturally, rather than forcing it during activities where your mind is actively engaged. You’re not trying to add silence on top of your life but discovering where it already wants to emerge.
Expanding Silence Into Daily Life
Once you have developed a knack of going within, then you can start bringing it into the busier or more challenging parts of your life such as work or family.
Imagine being in a tense meeting and finding a moment of silence inside yourself. Imagine standing in the queue at the supermarket and dropping into that quiet space beneath the mental chatter. Imagine washing dishes or folding laundry and discovering that these ordinary tasks become doorways to peace.
This is the gift of cultivating silence in simple activities first, it builds your capacity to access that silence anywhere, anytime.
The Practice: Consistency and patience
The knack is consistency, being patient, and being kind to yourself as you grow into silence.
Some of us get there in an instant, and for some of us like in my case, it is a gradual and steady cultivation of silence. There is no “right” timeline. Your journey is your own.
What matters is:
- Consistency – Regular practice, even if just for a few moments
- Patience – Allowing the process to unfold naturally
- Kindness – Not judging yourself when the mind is busy
I work with clients throughout Ireland (Clare, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick) and internationally who are discovering their own relationship with silence through personalised meditation coaching.
